Spartans Rebound from Loss to No. 1 Southern Oregon with Win Over No. 11 Midland

SHAWNEE, Okla. – No. 16 Missouri Baptist University softball defeated No. 11 Midland University 5-2 in game two on Friday at the NAIA Softball Invitational to rebound from a 13-8 loss to No. 1 Southern Oregon University in game one.
 
The Spartans found themselves down 7-3 through three innings to the Raiders before posting five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a lead. SOU added six runs in the final two frames to earn the win.
 
Against the Warriors, Kaylie Brake went the distance, allowing just two earned runs and four hits to pick up her fourth win of the season.
 
Ted Leigraf's squad now sits 6-4 overall in the new campaign with four top-15 wins.
 
No. 1 Southern Oregon Recap
The Raiders opened the game with a bang, scoring three runs in the first on a pair of RBI doubles, followed by Brooke Nordahl's third RBI of the game in the second inning on an RBI single.
 
Emily Wright singled in Allison Leigraf to cut into the lead ahead of a run scored from Camryn Kessler on a passed ball.
 
The teams exchanged runs in the third inning before SOU took a 7-3 advantage on Avery Coffin's RBI knock in the fourth.
 
In the fifth, Miranda Ladson reached on an error, which eventually led to a bases-loaded walk from Makayla Johnson, an RBI single to center from Jacie Dees, another bases-loaded walk to Brooklynn Fischer, and a go-ahead RBI single from Alexi Sanchez.
 
Southern Oregon immediately responded in the sixth with a leadoff single from Vanessa Lang and an RBI double from Ari Williams. A sacrifice fly brought in Williams for the lead.
 
The Raiders added four more on four hits and one error in the seventh and closed the game out with a 13-8 final.
 
MBU used four pitchers in game one. Fischer gave up four earned runs and three walks over 1.1 innings. Zoe Flath took the loss after four innings of work in relief and five runs (four earned). Madison Sherry recorded two outs without allowing a base runner and Brake finished out the contest with four runs (two earned) in an inning.

Fischer had the Spartans off and running in game two on an RBI groundout, set up by Johnson's leadoff single and stolen base. Sanchez drove in Jacie Dees in the next at bat after Dees followed Johnson with a single and stolen base of her own.
Brake gave up a run on an RBI double to Alexis Shepherd in the bottom of the first but maintained a 2-1 lead with a groundout and a flyout to right field.
 
Dees and Johnson continued to do damage in the third, with Johnson recording another leadoff single and scoring on Dees' RBI double. Johnson drove in a run herself with an RBI single in the fourth to put the Spartans up 4-1.
 
In the sixth, Camryn Kessler and Alohilani Bursey singled with one out before Midland misplayed a Johnson groundball for a fifth run.
 
Brake took things over from there, notching a complete-game win with four hits, two earned, two walks, and one strikeout. She improves to 4-2 in 2026 and tallies her third complete game.

The Spartans continue the NAIA Softball Invitational in Shawnee, Okla., with a doubleheader against Ottawa University (Kan.) and No. 9 University of Science & Arts (Okla.). Game one is set for 2:45 p.m., followed by game two at 5 p.m.
