Spartans Fall to Second-Ranked Vikings, Young Pins No. 5 Wrestler

DES MOINES, Iowa.- The Missouri Baptist University women's wrestling team fell to the second-ranked Grand View University on the road for GVU's senior night, 33-15. Despite the loss, the Spartans won three of the five contested weights, highlighted by De'yton Young's pin over the fifth-ranked wrestler at 110.

After the Vikings picked up a forfeit win at 103, the 110 bout pitted two ranked wrestlers: No. 5 Eliana Martinez for GVU and Young for MBU. Martinez picked up the first takedown of the match, and Young responded with a point of her own.

Martinez was able to lock up a cradle and three turns to find six points, but Young quickly found a reversal straight to Martinez's back. The Viking was able to fight and only give up two points to make the score 8-3 before they went back to neutral. In the final 16 seconds of the first period, Young found another takedown to close.

Early in the second period, Martinez found a takedown and a dump to lead 14-5 and only a point from the technical fall. The pair went back to neutral, and Young found a Knee-blast shot that sealed Martinez's fate as Young found the fall shortly after to tie the team score up.

The Vikings picked up forfeits at the next three weight classes.

At 138, Zoe Fries competed in the navy-and-white. The freshman trailed at the break 4-0, but quickly mounted a comeback in the second with a takedown and a pair of turns to take the lead and find the pin on the edge.

The Spartans' final win of the night came at 145 from Maggie Ortmann. Madison Diaz, Ortmann's opponent, grabbed a step out point and a takedown with two turns back to back to take a 7-0 lead early in the first. Diaz looked to score another takedown, but Ortmann's leg defense aided her to her first takedown and points of the match. Ortmann wasted no time, as she got the double-chickenwing hold and turned her opponent to her back for the fall.

The Spartans lost the final three bouts to round out the night, and the Vikings won 33-15.

The Spartans hit the road again this weekend, Saturday, Feb. 7,  to compete at the Blue Raider Open hosted by Lindsey Wilson College. Wrestling to start at 10 a.m.
