Robertson Tosses a CG Against No. 1 LSU Shreveport, MBU Goes 3-1 in Louisiana

STERLING, La.Teague Robertson tossed a complete-game, two-hitter in a 3-1 win over the defending national champion and first-ranked LSU Shreveport Pilots to aid a 3-1 Cajun Collision for Missouri Baptist University baseball.

Robertson allowed just two hits and picked up seven strikeouts against a team that went undefeated last year on their way to the Avista-NAIA National Championship. Overall, the Spartans went 3-1 with wins over the University of Science & Arts (Okla.), Texas A&M – Texarkana, and No. 1 LSU Shreveport.

MBU baseball began the season with a 9-3 victory over USAO, due to a seven-run sixth inning that helped them pull away on Friday afternoon.

Eddie Uschold's squad struck first in the third inning when Carlos Hidalgo doubled home Sam Paule. Hidalgo later scored on a balk to give MBU a 2-0 lead.

Science and Arts answered with three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Solomon Harwood that briefly put the Drovers in front.


The Spartans responded emphatically in the sixth inning. Nick Beech tied the game with a solo home run before Max Shabestari followed with a go-ahead homer. Griffin Brown delivered the decisive blow with a three-run home run, and Jayden Orozco capped the inning with a two-run shot to extend the lead to 9-3.


Austin Szverra earned the win in relief, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three. MBU pitchers combined for eight strikeouts on the afternoon, which included five from starting pitcher Gus Lucas.

Texas A&M - Texarkana Recap
Friday's second game had the Spartans take a 10-5 win over Texas A&M – Texarkana. The Spartans scored eight runs over the first three innings and hit three home runs in the opening frame.

MBU wasted no time offensively as Miguel Padron led off the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Beech followed with a two-run homer, and Shabestari added a solo shot to give the Spartans a 4-0 advantage, all with two outs.

Orozco added another run in the second inning on a hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Paule. Texarkana responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 5-3.


The Spartans answered immediately in the third inning. Hidalgo drove in a run with a single to left field, and Brown followed with an RBI single that was misplayed in left, allowing two runs to score and extending the lead to 8-3.


Beech delivered his third RBI of the game with a single in the sixth inning, and Paule scored on a throwing error in the seventh to cap the scoring.


Tait Robertson earned the win in his MBU debut, allowing three runs (two earned) over four innings while striking out three. Missouri Baptist used two relievers to close out the victory, with Keke Romero tossing two shutout innings with four strikeouts and Elliot Veisauyadra working a scoreless seventh inning.

Mid-America Christian Recap
MBU dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 19 Mid-America Christian University to open Saturday, getting limited to two hits as they fell to 2-1 on the season.

Missouri Baptist took an early lead in the third inning when Hidalgo drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Kevin Watkins.

Mid-America Christian answered in the fourth inning with two runs, including an RBI single from Nick Hill and a run that scored on a fielder's choice to take a 2-1 lead. Hill later provided the decisive swing in the sixth inning with a two-run home run, and the Evangels added another run later in the frame to extend the lead to 5-1.

MBU starter Tyler Timmerman struck out six over five innings but was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs. Quentin Graves worked a scoreless inning in relief, striking out two.


The Spartans were held hitless over the final four innings and were unable to mount a late comeback.

LSU Shreveport Recap
MBU rounded out the tournament with a 3-1 win over No. 1 LSU Shreveport on Saturday.

The Spartans struck first in the top of the first inning. Hidalgo drew a leadoff walk and later scored when Padron singled through the right side to give the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage.


LSU Shreveport answered in the bottom half of the inning as Makana Olaso singled home Landon Hunt to tie the game at one.


The Spartans regained the lead in the fourth inning. Shabestari doubled down the left-field line and advanced to third before Angelo Franco delivered an RBI single to put MBU back in front, 2-1.


Missouri Baptist added an insurance run in the seventh. Paule reached on a bunt single and was replaced by pinch runner Kai Gray, who scored when Hidalgo doubled to center field to extend the lead to 3-1.


Robertson was dominant on the mound, working all seven innings while allowing just one run on two hits and 76 pitches. He struck out seven batters and faced only 23 hitters to earn his first win of the season.

The Spartans are back on the road for two games against No. 11 William Carey University and two against Indiana University Kokomo, beginning on Thursday, Feb. 12. The first pitch against the Crusaders is 4 p.m. on Thursday.
