ST. LOUIS – The No. 8 Missouri Baptist University softball team run-ruled (25-0, 14-0) Culver-Stockton College (26-24, 13-15) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 21.
Game 1
The Spartans came out swinging and took a 10-0 lead in the first frame. With three runs in the second, 11 in the third, and one in the fourth, MBU combined for 25 runs in four innings.
Makayla Johnson led both teams in scoring, with two home runs and six RBI in three at-bats.
Allison Leigraf and
Camryn Kessler also contributed home runs, as well as three RBI each. In total, 10 MBU batters notched the scoreboard, going 25-for-37 as a team.
With Leigraf's 12th homer of the season, she joined Kolby Brake and Payton Anderson in the Missouri Baptist softball record book for most single-season home runs.
Kaylie Brake and
Madison Sherry combined for a no-hitter on the mound. Brake got the start and twirled two hitless innings with one walk. Sherry closed out the game and picked up her first career win with three innings of work and a strikeout on 31 pitches.
Game 2
The Spartans took their offensive momentum into game two, claiming a 16-1 win to improve their record to 35-8 (21-3).
This time, Brake stayed put for all five innings. She allowed only two hits on 59 pitches, increasing her Heart of America Athletic Conference lead to 21 wins and three losses this season.
Kessler carried momentum from the first game to go 3-for-3 at the plate and recorded her second home run of the day.
Brooklynn Fischer notched a home run,
Alexi Sanchez drove in four runs, and
Miranda Ladson,
Jacie Dees, and
Alohilani Bursey all contributed a pair of RBI.
What's Next
MBU Softball picks up this weekend for a four-game series on the road. On Friday, April 24, the Spartans face Missouri Valley College at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. They then travel to Williams Woods University on Saturday, April 25, for a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m.
