CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 1 Missouri Baptist University softball team defeated No. 8 Baker University on Thursday, April 30, at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. With the 3-0 win, the Spartans advance to the second round of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament, where they face No. 4 Benedictine College.
Brooklynn Fischer, senior pitcher, held Baker scoreless for seven straight innings, striking out nine batters and allowing just two hits in 102 pitches.
Fischer improves to 14-3 on the season, leading the team with 102 strikeouts and a 2.42 ERA.
Miranda Ladson put the Spartans on the board in the second inning, sending the ball deep into left field for her 11
th home run of the season.
The remaining two scores came in the third, with an RBI single from both Fischer and
Alexi Sanchez with runners on base.
The Wildcats earned their first hit in the top of the fourth, but Fischer stayed in control, backed by her an error-free defense behind her.
With two more singles from
Camryn Kessler and Ladson, the Spartans tallied six hits in the 3-0 win, batting .250 with just one strikeout against Baker's Camrynn Yardley (9-7).
No. 1 MBU Softball improves to 38-10 (24-5) and advances to face No. 4 Benedictine (33-16, 19-9) in the second round at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. First pitch is set for noon on Busse Field.
