Bourbonnais, Ill. - The Missouri Baptist Spartans women's soccer team gave up a goal midway through the first half on Friday and never recovered, dropping the first game of the season against Cornerstone University, 0-3.
The Spartans opened the regular season on Friday against Cornerstone in a game that was close in the first half. Though outshot 3-6, Missouri Baptist kept the score knotted at zero through the 23rd minute. However, it was Cornerstone's Kate Wiegman who broke the tie with a goal off a short cross to the front of the net. After taking a 1-0 lead into the half, the Spartans looked to bounce back.
Fouls became an issue in the game for Missouri Baptist. The team recorded eight fouls for the game and gave up six corner kicks to Cornerstone in the first half. The Golden Eagles capitalized on the mistakes and scored two more unanswered goals on its way to the victory.
The Spartans will try to even their record on Saturday, when they face Roberts Wesleyan College at 5:00 p.m.
