ST. LOUIS, Mo.- In a matchup where the Missouri Baptist women's soccer team looked to climb in the American Midwest Conference standings, it was the Park University Pirate offense getting the better of the Spartans for the 5-1 win.
The offense of the Pirates started quickly, as Juneille Watkins scored just over a minute into the game, giving Park the early one goal lead. The Pirates continued the pressure, with impressive crisp passing and stout defense throughout the half.
In the ninth minute, Dana Hemmingsen and Park struck again pushing the lead to 2-0 and making the Spartans play catch-up. The MBU offense couldn't get much going as the team totaled five shots in the first half, to Park's 11. In the 14th minute, Watkins added her second of the game and her 11th on the year, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead at the half.
Starting up in the second half, Park didn't wait long to score, as just three minutes into the second half it was Hemmingsen getting her second of the game. Hemmingsen blasted a shot outside of the box that was just out of reach of MBU goalie Elizabeth Kahn.
The Spartans, however, picked up their offense as well, as Carly Hampel picked off a bad clear by Park and Hampel was able to find the back of the net, cutting the lead down to 4-1. After the goal, the Park defense continued to shut down the Spartans, holding the team to three shots.
In the 86th minute, Watkins and her speed got behind the Spartan defense, beating Kahn and getting her third goal of the game for the hat trick in the 86th minute. Park went on to win by four goals over Missouri Baptist.
Megan Huffman and Hampel each totaled three shots for the Spartans. For Park, Watkins was a headache for MBU, as the forward totaled eight shots, seven on goal to go along with the hat trick.
The teams' record falls to 4-9-1, but will be back in action on the road again on October 16th against the Vikings of Missouri Valley. Kick-off will start at 6:00 p.m.
