ST. LOUIS, Mo.- The Spartans were held quietly offensively, as the team was outshot 21-5 at William Woods. The Missouri Baptist women's soccer team ended up falling 5-1 to the Owls on the road.
The Spartans have struggled offensively as of late and were looking to get on the board early against a tough American Midwest Conference foe. The Owls who are fifth place in the conference, one spot ahead of Missouri Baptist got the scoring going in the 24th minute, as Jamie Palermo scored her ninth goal of the season, giving WWU a 1-0 lead.
Six minutes later, the Owls struck again, this time it was Danielle Wilson beating MBU goalie Elizabeth Kahn, extending the lead to 2-0 and making the Spartans play catch up. The William Woods offense was busy totaling 13 shots (six on goal), while holding Missouri Baptist to just two shots.
Before the half ended, at the 12:30 minute mark, Brittainy German pushed the lead to a commanding 3-0 lead at the half. Forward Anna Recer led MBU with both shots in the half.
The Spartans needed a big second half defensively and offensively to even the match or take the lead. The team picked up the play on defense, but couldn't get much going on offense to start.
Then in the 75th minute, Megan Huffman got the teams' first shot in the second half and was able to find the back of the net over the outstretched hand of Owl goalie Kelly Abernathy. Huffman's goal was her team leading sixth on the season. The Owls lead was cut down to 3-1 and MBU was hoping to continue the momentum swing.
