ST. LOUIS, Mo.- In a game where all the scoring came in the second half, it was the Benedictine (Ill.) Bulldogs shocking the Missouri Baptist men's soccer team in overtime, for the 3-2 victory.
The first half was all Spartans as the team outshot the Bulldogs, 14-1. Missouri Baptist had their chances, but many of them went just wide. The best opportunity of the half, came when a cross found the head of Gavin Cuddy cutting towards the net, however, Bulldog goalie Aaron Krieg made the save, keeping the game scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, the action picked up for both teams. The scoring started in the 61st minute, when Justin Lex got behind the Spartan defense for a breakaway and was able to score past goalie Ethan Brunk, making it 1-0.
The Spartan scoring chances finally paid off in the 74th minute, when a free kick off the foot of Oscar Rojas, found the head of Reed Holler who flicked the ball over his head past Krieg, tying the game up at 1-1. The Spartans continued the offensive pressure, as the team outshot Benedictine again 17-6 in the second half.
The Bulldogs continued to fight and again found the back of the net in the 83rd minute, when a Mike Witsman free kick from near mid-field, found the foot of Alex Larsen who beat MBU goalie Ethan Brunk to make it 2-1. The Spartans, however, didn't panic and with all the pressure they provided all game, the team knew it wasn't over.
In the 88th minute, Juan Paz brought the momentum back toward MBU, as Paz scored his first goal of the year, an all important one which tied the game up 2-2, forcing overtime. Before the fans and the Spartans knew it, the game was over, as Matt Oberneufemann scored the game winner for Benedictine just .30 seconds into overtime, giving the Bulldogs their first conference win on the season.
The Spartans dominated in every aspect of the game, but with the 31 total shots in the game the team couldn't beat Bulldog goalie Krieg who made 11 saves. The Spartans had six players who had more than two shots in the game.
The team suffered their fifth loss in a row, but will look for a huge win in conference play against Hannibal-LaGrange University on October 10th. Kick-off will start at 3:00 p.m.
