BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Missouri Baptist women's tennis team certainly has kept its matches entertaining this season. The Spartans pulled out another narrow 5-4 victory on Saturday against Baker University, evening its record at 4-4 on the year.
Missouri Baptist (4-4) started the season slowly, but has taken off recently, rattling off four straight wins. Against the Wildcats, things started off well for the Spartans. Kristen Roberts and Niki Riddle won at number one doubles 8-3, to give MBU an early lead.
Elise Beckenmeier and Nicole Zevlever teamed at number three doubles to record the second victory of the day for the team, 8-3. The team of Hannah Wadlow and Megan Brendel nearly made it a clean sweep, but dropped a close one, 6-8.
As singles began, it was clear that Missouri Baptist would need someone to come-up big for the team to squeak out a win. Hannah Wadlow did just that. After losses at numbers one and two singles, the Spartans Megan Brendel won at number four singles in straight sets. Nicole Zevlever's gutsy performances in a 6-4, 7-6 win at number six, set the match squarely on Wadlow's shoulders at number three singles.
The junior Physical Education major lost her first set 3-6 before showing true determination. Wadlow was at her strongest in sets two and three, collecting wins 6-2 and 6-1 to bring home another Spartan win.
Missouri Baptist will head just up the road to Webster University on Thursday for its next match. The competition is set to begin at 6:30 at the Webster Recreation Complex.
