Box Score 2 CARLINVILLE, Ill. - In game one against the Blackburn College Beavers, the Spartans totaled 13 hits for a 4-2 victory. In game two, the Spartans ran all over the Beavers for the 11-3 win.
Jena Trombley stepped to the mound in game one, and was in control all game. The Corona, Calif., went the distance allowing two runs, on 10 hits and striking out one. The offense which went cold against Columbia, was hot led by Danielle Bayer. The third baseman went 4-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
The scoring started in the second inning for Missouri Baptist. After Bayer led off the inning with a single, Allision Kuchan brought in Bayer with a RBI single giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Junior Ashley Kroener added a double, scoring Kuchan extending the lead to 2-0.
The Beavers added a run in the bottom of the second, cutting the deficit down to 2-1. The winning run for the Spartans came in the top of the third. Jenna Bentlage got things going with a single and advanced to third base on a Katie Payne double. Bayer scored Bentlage from third, with a double pushing the MBU lead to 3-1.
Missouri Baptist added one more run in the fourth, holding on for the two run victory. The heart of the order continues to put pressure on opponent pitching. Bentlage, Payne and Bayer combined to go 9-12 with two run scored. Kuchan and Kroener contributed very well at the bottom of the lineup going 3-5, with three RBI.
In game two, the Spartans totaled 11 runs on 16 hits. Starter Kirsten Bennett pitched a strong four innings, allowing three runs on four hits. The Spartans got going in the first inning, with Miranda Romero hitting a double to deep center. Romero was able to score on a Bentlage single, giving MBU a 1-0 lead. After a Katie Payne fly out to right, Danielle Bayer hit a single to right field scoring Bentlage for the 2-0 advantage.
The Beavers continued to fight, getting one run back in the bottom of the first and were able to take a 3-2 lead adding two runs in the third. The Spartans tied the game in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Corey Pitchford hit a single to right field and was able to score on an Ashley Kroener single to left.
Missouri Baptist was finally able to pull away from Blackburn adding five runs on six hits, in the top of the sixth giving the team a 8-3 lead. The Spartans added three more runs in the seventh, for the eight run win.
Kellsie Domnitz came on in relief of Bennett and pitched three shutout innings, striking out four. Romero, Bentlage, Payne and Bayer continued to hurt Beaver pitching, combining to go 11-16 with five RBI and five runs scored. The seven-eight-nine hitters of Pitchford, Kroener and Allison Kuchan hit very well going 6-10 with five runs scored and six RBI. Kuchan had a team high four RBI on the day.
