ST. LOUIS-- Tonight the Missouri Baptist Spartans traveled to St. Charles, Mo. to face cross-town foe, Lindenwood University. The Lions entered tonight's contest at 12-6, while MBU entered at 14-2.
The Spartans and Lions started the night battling point for point. Once the game was tied at 21, the momentum shifted to the Lions' side of the net. LU went on a 4-0 run to defeat the Spartans 21-25.
The second set was similar to the first set. The Spartans and Lions, again, were back and forth swapping points. MBU was up 20-19 after a LU service error. The Lions, again, turned the momentum around and went on to beat Missouri Baptist 22-25. After two sets, the Spartans had three main contributors on offense: Clayton Baker, Shane Welch, and Sean Benedict, each adding four kills. The team combined for an attacking percentage of just .076. While Mico Janicijevic may have not been the team's kill leader after two sets, he still contributed with 8 digs and 6 aces.
After two consecutive set loses, Coach Yehling made a couple lineup switches. Senior Travis Collard replaced libero Danny Gruszyzck and Davardo Rolle was in for middle blocker Kevin Knight. Rolle entered tonight's match after having a huge weekend for the Spartans hitting around .700. The Spartans played point for point with Lindenwood through the first ten points, but the Lions began to pull away. LU kept control through the rest of the set, defeating Missouri Baptist 19-25.
Baker's 6 kills led the Spartans offense, while Welch contributed 5 of his own kills. Rolle, who only played one set, had three kills on four swings, along with a block. Colin Hackworth led the Lions with 11 kills, while Mike Adams added 9 kills. The Spartans were out-attacked .074 to .248. The Lions had 12 blocks, compared to MBU's 5.5.
Missouri Baptist falls to 14-3 after tonight's loss. The Spartans will travel to Davenport, Iowa this weekend to participate in the St. Ambrose Tournament to face some of the nation's top ranked opponents.
