GARCIA POWERS SPARTANS TO SWEEP OF BLACKBURN

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOX] Freshman Rachel Garcia collected five hits and nine RBI's to power Missouri Baptist to a doubleheader sweep of Blackburn College Tuesday night.

Garcia homered three times in the sweep, including a three-run shot in her first at-bat to put MBU ahead 3-0. The Spartans (15-13, 4-2) dominated all day long, winning game one 12-3 and 10-1 in the finale. The team is now two games over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

The Spartans kept their foot on the gas pedal, adding four more runs in the second to lead 7-0. Pam Diaz had an RBI groundout with the bases loaded to extend the lead to four, before Amanda Williams took care of the rest. Williams launched a three-run homer to break the game open and give the Spartans the 7-0 advantage.

Andrea Chessor allowed just one hit in her three innings of work on the mound and the offense added five additional runs in the final two innings of the five-inning contest. Garcia came through again with a three-run blast to up the blowout to 11-0 in the fourth. Diaz also added an RBI single in the inning.

MBU would add another in the fifth and despite the Beavers getting on the board three times in the fourth, the game was never in question. The Spartans rode that momentum into a 10-1 victory in the finale.

Cierra Liddick allowed just two hits and zero earned runs in seven innings of work. She put together another terrific outing and her offense backed her up with 10 runs on 14 hits. Garcia's third home run of the day put MBU up 2-0 after the first inning. The Spartans added two more in the second thanks to RBI singles from Deanna Peters and Jenny Sparks.

The Spartans then broke the game open with four runs on four hits in the fourth inning to go ahead 8-0. Peters recorded an RBI groundout and then MBU put together a two-out rally to add to the lead. Sparks doubled home Payton Anderson and then Chloe Jennings followed suit with a double of her own to plate Chessor and Sparks, adding two more runs.

Fittingly, Garcia batted in the Spartans 10th and final run of the game in the seventh when she ripped an RBI double. Williams also knocked in a run in the inning. Garcia, Anderson, Chessor and Sparks all recorded multi-hit games in the win.

MBU returns to conference play on Friday, April 1 when they take on Williams Baptist at home. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
