ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] University of St. Mary scored two late goals to defeat No. 8 Missouri Baptist 13-12 in double overtime Tuesday night. The Spires halted the Spartan comeback with a late goal in regulation before scoring the overtime game-winner.
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the second and third quarters belonged to St. Mary's. The Spires turned a 4-4 halftime tie into a 9-5 lead right before the end of quarter three.
Then, it was MBU's turn to make a run. Austin Dahl found the net with 52 seconds left in the third to get the Spartans within three, 9-6. The goal spurred a string of three-straight goals for MBU, capped with Dahl's second of the game to bring the road team within one.
The Spartans oushot the Spires 35-31 for the game, including a 10-8 mark in the fourth quarter. St. Mary's answered the Dahl goals with two more to go ahead 11-9 with 4:30 left. However, the Spartans wouldn't go away.
A goal from Devin Mayer followed by two more scores from Dahl gave MBU its first lead since the 11:16 mark of the second quarter (3-2). Dahl's fourth and final goal came with 22 seconds left off an assist from Ben Elder. It put the Spartans ahead 12-11.
The lead wouldn't last however, after Elliot Conklin and St. Mary's marched down the field to tie it back up with seven seconds remaining. The late goal would force overtime.
Despite registering seven shots in the two overtimes, MBU couldn't find the net. St. Mary's did with 42 seconds left in the second overtime to win 13-12. Mackinley Morgan's sixth goal of the game ended it. Mayer hit the post early in overtime two to nearly win it for the Spartans.
Mayer, like Dahl, also recorded four goals. Sean Hess finished with two. Five different Spartans picked up assists. The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 1 at home against Ottawa (Kan.). The match is set to begin at 12:00pm.
