ST. LOUIS – [GVU BOX] [WWU BOX] Missouri Baptist finished a season for the record books on Friday as the team came up short of a conference title shot in Overland Park, Kan. After downing Grand View (Iowa) 6-1, the Spartans lost to No. 11-ranked William Woods (Mo.) 5-1 as the season ended with nine wins.
Missouri Baptist (9-7) jumped all over Grand View in the first match of the American Midwest Conference/Heart of America Athletic Conference thanks to dominant singles play. Thais Castiglioni posted a win at No. 1 over Eisha Nathwani 6-3 and 6-4. Ashley Bonine, Emily Brown and Cheyenne Anderson followed with straight set wins of their own as the team took a 4-0 lead into doubles.
Dani Jo Stevenson and Lindsey Burgess combined for a win over Dina Kajtazovic and Tina Kajtazovic 8-6 in doubles action as the Spartans picked-up two more team points on the way to the victory.
Things didn't go Missouri Baptist's way in the nightcap, however, as the No. 11-ranked William Woods grabbed a 5-1 decision.
The Spartan's lone win came at No. 1 singles as Thais Castiglioni completed a sweep over Karyna Sagalai, 6-1, 6-2.
The loss at the tournament ended a historic season for the Spartans as the team collected nine wins on the year, the most in team history.
