ST. LOUIS—[BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Men's Lacrosse survived an upset bid from Robert Morris (Ill.) on Senior Day at Spartan Field. MBU trailed 7-5 but outscored the Eagles 4-1 in the final frame to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Devin Mayer put the Spartans on the board first but RMU answered with four in a row in the opening quarter to take a commanding lead. MBU responded in quarter two with goals from seniors Ben Eder and Dan Mollet. Mayer then potted his second of the game and we were back to square one at halftime
The Eagles had the better of the play in quarter three, controlling possession throughout. The visitors only launched three shots in the frame but all three found the back of the net. Austin Dahl tallied once for MBU to cut the deficit to two heading into the final stanza.
Dahl registered again at 6:59 of the fourth quarter and Sean Hess buried the equalizer with 3:47 to go. Robert Morris, however, answered right back to retake the lead less than a minute later.
The Spartans were up against it as the clock ticked under two minutes but Ben Eder's second of the game with 1:54 left tied it at eight.
Overtime looked likely but Andy Coulter would have none of it. The sophomore maneuvered toward the RMU goal and launched a howitzer past the Eagles' keeper with 1:17 showing on the clock. Robert Morris mounted a late attack but Noel Blood forced a critical turnover as time expired.
The Spartans improve to 6-4 with the win. They'll be back in action on April 15 against Indiana Tech. First faceoff is scheduled for 1pm at Spartan Field.
