COLUMBIA, Mo. – A couple of German countrymen helped lead the Missouri Baptist Men's Golf team to a solid finish in the CC Cougar Classic on Monday and Tuesday, played at Columbia Country Club in Columbia, Mo. The Spartans finished the tournament with a 21 over par 589, which was good for a tie for fourth place.
After opening his second round with a bogey, Sophomore
Jannik Daeschner remained at one over through the front nine. Then the sticks came to life. The native of Wiesbaden, Germany proceeded to birdie four of the next six holes, on his way to a second-round 69. His -2 tied four others as the lowest score recorded in the round. Daeschner finished the tournament in 11
th place with a score of +2 (144).
Not to be outdone, Daeschner's countrymen
Alexander Engelhardt carded a 72 (+1) in the second round. The senior from Karlsruhe, Germany started out shaky and was +4 for the round through his first 10 holes, but then proceeded to score birdies on each of his next four. Combined with his 76 in Round 1, Engelhardt finished in 23
rd place with a +7. That was an improvement of 12 spots from the first to the second round.
Grad student
Drew Wielgus continued his steady play by finishing tied for 16
th place at +5. Senior
Triston Buckley had a disappointing round two. Eight bogeys to go along with just one birdie left him in 29
th place at +9. After Day 1 he was tied for 14
th at two over.
Freshman
Josemaria Gutierrez finished in 38
th place at +13. Senior
Jack Moran turned in an identical 75 in both rounds to finish eight over and tied for 26
th place.
Columbia College won the tournament by 10 strokes over Central Methodist University, with Missouri Valley College finishing third. American Midwest Conference foe William Woods finished tied with MBU.
The Spartan men are right back at it next Monday and Tuesday when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to play in the NAIA Memphis Shootout at TPC Southwind.
