No. 23 Spartans Complete Weekend Sweep of Williams Baptist

ST. LOUIS - The Spartans came out ready to play as they jumped out to early leads in the final two games of the four game set against the Eagles, taking both games to earn the sweep over Williams Baptist at home.

Game One Recap

Blayne Yarger got the boys going as he started the day with a pair of homeruns in his first two plate appearances, putting the Spartans up 3-0 going into the third inning.

The Eagles did a solid job keeping the high powered Spartans lineup in check after they scored a run in the third inning and found another in the sixth that made it 3-2, but James Jett roped a double into the right field gap to score Yarger and Dominic Palma, extending their lead back to three runs.

Sam Myers went 5.2 innings, struck out seven, and allowed just two runs before Zach Peters came in and slammed the door shut on the Eagles, notching his first save of the season.

Yarger accounted for three runs and three runs batted, giving the Spartans the boost they needed to pick up a 5-2 win in the first of two games.

Save: Zach Peters (1)

Game Two Recap

It took the Spartans just a hair longer than it did in game one to get on the scoreboard after stranding the bases loaded in the first, but Carlos Hidalgo led off the second inning with a solo homer that put the Spartans up 1-0.

Gus Lucas held the Eagles scoreless through his first four innings of work allowing the Spartans time to tack onto their one run lead, which they did in the bottom of the fourth. Jakob Kouneski and Jayden Orozco both drew walks before Hidalgo singled to load the bases. Lucas Lefebvre drove home a run, Tyson Ludwig plated two more, and Palma brought home the fifth run of the inning, extending the Spartan lead to six runs.

The Eagles offense came to life in the fifth inning as they scored three runs on four hits, stranding just one runner on the basepaths.

The Spartans answered with a run of their own in the fifth as Kouneski singled and Hidalgo brought Miles Meadows, who was pinch running for Kouneski, around to score. Orozco drove in another pair of runners in the sixth inning, matching the Eagles three run fifth inning.

Williams Baptist was able to get one run to score in the seventh, but that was all they were able to get as the Spartans held on to complete the weekend sweep over the Eagles, 9-4.

Greg Ryun and Skout Rallo picked up some important innings for the Spartans out of the bullpen as they combined for 2.2 innings and just two hits allowed.
