St. Louis, Mo. – A fourth-quarter rally wasn't enough for the Missouri Baptist University men's lacrosse team, as the Spartans fell to No. 10-ranked William Penn University, 19-15, on Wednesday evening at Spartan Field.
With the loss, MBU dropped to 4-7 overall, 4-3 in conference play, and 2-4 at home. The Spartans have now faced four nationally ranked opponents in 2025, falling in each contest.
Matthew Lash and Joe Busselman led the offensive effort with four goals and one assist apiece. Caleb Tant added a hat trick and dished out two assists.
Raymond Lingard made his presence felt on both ends, scoring twice, collecting a team-high 14 ground balls, and winning 16 of 33 faceoffs.
Addison Bryan and Jake Cordes also found the back of the net, with Cordes adding an assist.
In a tightly contested matchup, the Statesmen outshot the Spartans 51-46 and committed 16 turnovers compared to MBU's 21.
Cordes opened the scoring in the first quarter, finishing off a feed from Tant to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. William Penn responded with a late rally to end the frame, taking a 3-2 advantage into the second.
Back-to-back goals from Tant and Busselman reclaimed the lead for MBU at 4-3, but the Statesmen answered with four straight goals to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
William Penn extended its lead to 14-8 late in the third quarter before the Spartans caught fire. MBU rattled off five unanswered goals in the fourth, including two from Lingard, to cut the deficit to 15-14. However, the Statesmen regrouped and scored four of the game's final five goals to seal the win.
