MBU Advances to First HAAC Championship Game in Program History

ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist University punched its first ticket to the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship game with a 3-0 sweep of Mount Mercy University in the semifinals on Wednesday night.
 
With the win, the Spartans will host the fifth-seed Grand View University on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m., for the HAAC Championship.

HAAC Semifinals Recap
Fourth-ranked and second-seeded MBU swept 10th-ranked and third-seeded Mount Mercy at home with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-15, final score. The Spartans sent over 11 aces compared to the Mustangs' one and hit .400 on 70 attacks.
 
Veljko Culibrk, Michael Olson, and Marko Jovanovic combined for 28 of the team's 36 kills while the HAAC Setter of the Year David Rudic paved the way for them with 31 assists.
 
Junior middle blocker Johnathan Kreke stepped up in a big way, hitting .800 with four kills on five attacks with a team-high five blocks. Olson had over half the team's aces with six and Alex Seyer notched a game-high eight digs.
 
Olson had three of his six aces in the first set and helped MBU to a 25-20 win with four kills. The team had three blocks and hit .379 on 29 attempts.
 
The Spartans saw their percentage increase to .421 in the second set, doing virtually whatever they wanted offensively. Culibrk logged consecutive aces to give his team a 15-14 lead. Rudic later sent over another to make it 21-17 and Olson slammed the door with two more as they wrapped up a 25-19 win.
 
MBU scored nearly two points for every one point from MMU early in the third and went on an 8-1 run fueled by two more aces from Culibrk to jump ahead 18-9. They hit .409 in the final set and held the Mustangs to 15 points to punch their ticket to the HAAC finals.
