CONWAY, ARK. - Missouri Baptist took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of a pitchers' duel in the AMC Tournament Championship game, and the Spartans locked down their slim lead to become the first AMC Tournament Champions in program history by beating Central Baptist 1-0.
After two scoreless innings, Brooklynn Fischer came in in relief for Taylor Whitehead, and the two Spartans pieced together a four hit shutout, combining for four strikeouts.
Camryn Kessler led off the bottom of the third inning with a walk, and Madison Leckrone came in to run. Emily Wright laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Leckrone into scoring position, flipping the lineup back to the top of the order. Jenna Achs hit a single and advanced on a throw to home to put runners at second and third for Jacie Dees. Dees roped a single up the middle that brought Leckrone in for the lone run of the ballgame.
After allowing one runner in the fourth inning, Fischer and the Spartan defense retired the side in order in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to secure the 1-0 AMC Tournament Championship for Missouri Baptist.
Dees' one out RBI single in the third inning was the lift the Spartans needed to claim their first title in the history of the program in its final year in the American Midwest Conference.
The Spartans went 4-0 in the tournament, picking up wins against Central Baptist, Stephens, and William Woods.
Missouri Baptist had already earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament by winning the title in the regular season.
