FREMONT, NEB. — Missouri Baptist University men's lacrosse delivered a dominant performance Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 15-1 victory over Midland University.
The Spartans (3-9, 2-4) controlled the game from the opening faceoff, scoring four goals in the first quarter and never looking back. MBU added five more in the second and four in the third, building a commanding 13-0 lead before closing out the win.
Joe Busselman led the offensive charge with a game-high five goals and one assist, while Jake Cordes added two goals and two assists. Ryan Metcalf and Caleb Ward each recorded two goals and one assist, and Drew Chiodini contributed two goals. Missouri Baptist finished with nine total assists on 15 goals.
Anthony Fillerup was key at the faceoff X, winning 10 of 14 attempts and collecting seven ground balls to help the Spartans control possession throughout the contest. As a team, Missouri Baptist outshot Midland 44-22 and held a 32-23 advantage in ground balls.
Defensively, the Spartans were just as dominant. Goalkeeper Daniel Heinrich recorded eight saves while allowing just one goal in a complete-game effort. MBU held Midland scoreless until the fourth quarter.
Missouri Baptist's fast start set the tone early, with four different players finding the back of the net in the opening period. The Spartans continued to apply pressure in the second quarter, highlighted by three goals from Busselman to extend the lead to 9-0 at halftime.
The Spartans maintained control in the second half, adding four goals in the third quarter and two more in the fourth before Midland broke through late for its lone goal of the game.
Missouri Baptist returns to action next Wednesday on the road as they continue conference play. They take on No. 5 William Penn University. Face off is set for 5 p.m.
