St. Louis, Mo. - The Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball team became the first team in University history to compete at the new Carl Petty Sports & Recreation Complex on Tuesday and started things off right. After breezing through the first two sets, the team gave the crowd a show in the third as the team went on to a 25-15, 25-11, 25-19 victory.
The crowd piled into the new crown jewel of MBU athletics and was treated to a great match by the Spartans from start to finish. The first set did not disappoint the crowd of approximately 100. The Spartans came out on fire as Casey Chernin recorded six kills. Lauren Stuckel also got in on the action, floating seven assists and two aces to help lead MBU to a 25-15 first set victory.
In the second set, the Spartans carried their momentum over from the first set. Lucy Ford had four kills to lead the offense while Lauren Stuckel and Jessica Bowman both added an ace as the team won the second set 25-11.
As the third set began, the energy in the new facility was palpable. The large crowd came alive to spur the Spartans on to victory in the first competition in the building. MBU came out a bit slow as the match was tied at several points early. However, Chernin continued her dominant play, finishing the match with 14 kills, leading her team to a 25-19 victory.
The Spartans improved to 28-3 on the season, while the loss dropped the Owls to 14-18. Missouri Baptist will host Hannibal LaGrange on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
