St. Louis, Mo. - The Missouri Baptist women's volleyball team was tied after two sets against AMC opponent Hannibal LaGrange, but finished strong as they went on to a 25-12, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15 victory.
MBU came out of the gate playing fast and loose. Setter Lauren Stuckel spread the ball around well in the first set and went on to record 11 assists. It became clear early that the team was looking for a definitive victory as the team went on to a quick 25-12 win.
The Trojans began the second set with a renewed energy. The team started with an 8-5 advantage over the favored Spartans. Suddenly, the tide seemed to have changed. The Hannibal squad continued to pressure MBU and went up 19-15 in the latter portion of the second set. Both teams went back and forth, but the Trojans handed MBU its first set loss in two weeks, winning 25-21.
MBU was at the top of its game in set number three. The squad pulled out to a 7-3 lead and looked to have erased the previous set from memory. Senior Casey Chernin led the offense in the set and all of a sudden, the Spartans had found a groove. MBU continued to pressure the Trojans and took advantage of several errors to win the set, 25-18.
The fourth set provided quite a bit of entertainment for the home crowd. The team enjoyed a quick 11-4 lead and played like one of the top teams in the NAIA. MBU continued to play its game and went on to win the fourth set 25-15. For the match, Chernin turned-in 19 kills and finished with a .457 hitting percentage, in addition to her two recorded aces.
The Spartans will be right back at it on Friday night at home against Benedictine Springfield. The match is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
