Box Score 2 The MBU Spartan softball team opened conference play and got an upset win over rival Columbia College in AMC action at Columbia on Monday. The Spartans split the American Midwest Conference double header with the Cougars, who were ranked 20th in the NAIA Pre-Season Coaches Poll. The Spartans dropped the first game 4-0, and winning the second 2-1.
Columbia's All-American pitcher Valerie Teter held the Spartans scoreless, allowing just one hit in the first game.
Megan Bote was on the mound, taking the loss for MBU.
Jenna Bentlage put the Spartans on the scoreboard in game two, with a solo homerun in the bottom of the second. The Cougars answered back with a run of their own in the top of the third. The score stood tied through the seventh inning, when
Lauren Scovill secured the win, driving in an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
Chelsea Chadwick earned the win for the Spartans.
The win improves the Lady Spartans to 13-6 overall, 1-1 in the AMC. The Cougars stand at 12-5 overall, 1-1 in the AMC. The Spartans will host William Woods University (12-7) in an AMC double header on Thursday, March 24th. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
