Box Score 2 McKenzie, Tenn. - It was a tough day for the Spartans, as the women's softball team was swept in a double header against Bethel College.
After starting the season off on a good note yesterday, the team was looking to pick up their offense against a tough Lady Wildcat team. In game one, freshman Donyelle DeMarse took the hill, in hopes of a strong outing. However, the game didn't go as planned for MBU, the team managed two hits, had four errors and fell 7-0.
It was a tough day for Donyelle, who was making her college pitching debut. DeMarse was roughed up in five innings giving up six runs, three of which were earned runs and allowed 10 hits. Freshman Kellsie Domnitz came on in relief to finish the game. The 4-7 hitters for the Lady Wildcats were a dominate force, as they combined going 8-15 in the game, with four runs batted in and four runs scored. Sydney McMillin pitched a complete game for Bethel, striking out four. Shortstop Megan Wildhaber had the two hits for MBU.
In the second game of the day, the offense picked up, but the pitching faltered. Kirsten Bennett took the mound in hopes of splitting the double header. However, the sophomore was forced from the game after two innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits. The Lady Wildcats grabbed a 3-0 lead after two. In the top half of the third, the Spartans got a run, cutting down Bethel's lead.
In the bottom half of the third, the Lady Wildcats scored four runs, extending their lead to 7-1. Missouri Baptist scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the team fell 8-4. Ashley Denfip led Bethel offensively, having two hits and three runs batted in. Ericca McCormic pitched a gem for Bethel, going six innings allowing just one run on six hits.
The Spartans did manage 10 hits, with their three, four and five hitters combining for six hits. Catcher Miranda Romero had two hits and two runs batted in. Kellsie Domnitz held the Lady Wildcats in check after Bennett, going four innings allowing just one run.
The team will look to rebound against Greenville College on March 1st at home. First pitch is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
