Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. - After a few tough games on the road, the Missouri Baptist women's softball team put on a show offensively today, sweeping Greenville College.
It was a perfect day for softball as plenty of fans came out in support of the teams' home opener. Freshman Jena Trombley dominated in her second start of the year, as the young hurler pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits.
The Spartan offense came alive in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Miranda Romero got things started with a single, then got into scoring position by stealing second. After a Katie Payne walk, Megan Wildhaber brought in Romero with a single, giving the team a 2-0 lead. Then, Corey Pitchford walked and the bases were loaded for center fielder Lindsay Benck. The senior came through with a bases clearing double, giving the team a 5-0 lead.
Missouri Baptist added two more runs and cruised for the 7-0 win. The Spartans totaled nine hits and had two errors. Benck, led the team with three RBIs, going 1-3 from the plate. Leadoff hitter Megan Wildhaber hit very well going 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Lindsey Schurberth went six innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits for Greenville.
The team continued their offensive dominance in the second game. Missouri Baptist scored 10 runs on 14 hits, going on for the 10-5 win. The excitement of the game started in the bottom of the second. Danielle Bayer singled to right for MBU and advanced to second after a Heathre DePratt sacrifice bunt. Katie Payne came up to the plate and hit a two run homer to center field on a 2-2 count, giving the team a 2-0 lead.
Kellsie Domnitz took the mound for the Spartans and pitched fairly well. The only rough inning for the freshman came in the top of the second, when the Panthers tied the game up at 2-2, for their first two runs on the day. Domnitz went four strong innings, allowing four runs on six hits and struck out three. In the bottom half of the third, Missouri Baptist regained a 5-2 lead, thanks in part to scoring three runs on four hits.
MBU added two more runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth, for the easy win. Jenna Bentlage and Donyelle DeMarse combined going 6-8, with two runs batted in. Lindsay Benck also had a strong day, going 2-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Kristen Bennett closed the door on Greenville, pitching the final three innings allowing one run on four hits. Brya Irvin went 3-4, two of those hits were home runs and added three runs batted in.
The teams' record moves to 3-3 on the year and will host Williams Baptist College on March 6th. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
