ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Missouri Baptist women's tennis pulled-out a nail-biter on Tuesday afternoon, beating Maryville University 5-4.
The Spartans (3-4) won its third consecutive match on Tuesday and its first on the road, thanks to a clutch team effort. After dropping the number one doubles match, MBU won both number two and three doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
As singles began, Maryville showed that it would not lie down easily. The Saints won number one singles to even the score. Both teams traded wins as the Spartans won number three and five, while Maryville won number four and six.
With the score tied 4-4, the fate of the match all rested on the shoulders of newcomer, Niki Riddle. The junior transfer student lost the first set 6-7, but came back in a big way. Riddle won the next two sets 6-0 and 6-1 and carried the team to the victory.
The Spartans will next travel to Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday to take on Baker University and Tabor College.
