St. Louis, Mo. - The Missouri Baptist softball team ended game one against MacMurray College in five winnings, going for a 14-0 win. In game two, the strong pitching and hitting continued, as the team cruised to an 11-0 win in five innings.
Jena Trombley took the hill for the Spartans and was untouchable in the outing. The freshman went five innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. Offensively, ten different batters had at least one hit for the team. Megan Wildhaber got things going in the bottom of the first, with a triple to deep right. Wildhaber scored on a sacrifice fly from Jenna Bentalge, making it 1-0.
Missouri Baptist added two more runs in the third extending their lead to 3-0, thanks to an RBI from Donyelle DeMarse and Bentlage. In the bottom of the fourth, the offense was unstoppable. The team complied 11 runs, on nine hits and only left two runners on base. Trombley closed out the Highlanders in the top half of the fifth, for the win.
The Spartans had eight different batters, record at least one RBI. Third baseman Katie Payne, went 2-3 with three RBI and one run scored. DeMarse, Bentlage and Ashley Kroener each added two RBI.
Starter Kirsten Bennett kept the strong pitching going, as she went five innings allowing just two hits. The offensive fire power continued, as the team scored two runs in the second, three in the third and added six in the fourth. Kroener and Corey Pitchford got the first two RBI on the day, in the second inning.
In the third inning, the bases were loaded for Danielle Bayer and she hit a bases clearing double, extending the Spartan lead to 5-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Missouri Baptist scored six runs on six hits and was helped out by three Highlander errors, pushing the lead to 11-0. Bennett was able to close the door, as the team dominated for the win.
Bayer led the way for MBU, going 2-2 with one run scored and three RBI. The one through three hitters of Benck, Wildhaber and DeMarse combined going 3-9, with three runs scored and three RBI.
The teams' record moves to 16-6 and will play Harris-Stowe State University tomorrow at Forest Park Community College. First pitch is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
