Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Missouri Baptist scored 20 runs in a doubleheader against Harris Stowe on Tuesday in a 14-1, 6-2 sweep of the Hornets.
The Spartans (18-6) moved to 3-1 in the American Midwest Conference after the wins, solidifying the teams' position as one to beat this year. In game one, the Hornets quickly came out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a two-out rally in the bottom of the first.
In the inning, HSSU's Chase Boehner got a two-out hit to third, followed by consecutive hits by Sammie Lightfoot and Traniece Venable to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead after one inning. This was the only run that Spartan starter Jena Trombley surrendered in the game.
Missouri Baptist tied the game in the second on a wild throw by the Hornet right fielder, Marisha Scott, scoring Miranda Romero. With a tie game heading into the bottom of the second, Trombley went to work. The freshman from Cordova, Calif., struck out three, walked two and allowed five hits in five innings of work.
In the MBU fourth, after taking a 5-1 lead, Missouri Baptist put the game away. 11 Spartans batted in the inning, while nine runs scored off eight hits and two errors.
Game two, while a different story in the runs category, ended with the same result. Missouri Baptist's Kristen Bennett toed the rubber in game two. Bennett walked the first batter and allowed a double to Venable, scoring the first Hornet run.
After Lightfoot flied out to right in foul territory, Boehner hit an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead for Harris Stowe. Missouri Baptist countered in the bottom-half of the inning, scoring two to tie the game.
After the first, Bennet was spot-on. The sophomore held Hornet hitters to less than a .170 batting average in the game to collect a complete-game victory.
Missouri Baptist went on to collect one run in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth, which held-up in the end. MBU's Megan Wildhaber was hot with the bat in both games. The Beaufort, Mo., native went 6-7 for the Spartans, leading the offense to big numbers.
Missouri Baptist will turn-around tomorrow and play two against Culver-Stockton College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
