WILDHABER LIFTS SPARTANS TO VICTORY WITH GAME WINNING RBI

Box Score

St. Louis, Mo. - In a wild game one against conference foe Park University, the Spartans pulled out the 4-3 win, in nine innings. In game two, the Pirate offense struck early and often, cruising to an 8-0 win.

The Pirates bats were hot early in the top of the first, as Kyla Tatum hit a solo home run over the right field wall off MBU starter Jena Trombley, giving Park a 1-0 lead. The Spartans chased Pirate starter Megan Walker from the game in the second inning, with the bases loaded. Missouri Baptist couldn't capitalize, however, as Lindsay Benck grounded out to second base, ending the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Kim Breyfogle led off with a single to right. Breyfogle advanced to third on a double to center, off the bat of Taylor Lipps. Trombley tried to get out of the inning after another strikeout, but Tatum hit a single to left, scoring both runners extending Park's lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans narrowed that lead down to 3-2. Megan Wildhaber got the offense going with a single to left. Hot hitting Jenna Bentlage came up to the plate, and crushed a two run homer to center on a 3-1 count, giving Missouri Baptist back the momentum.

The Spartans tied the game up 3-3, after a pinch hit single by Allison Kuchan that brought in pinch runner Heathre DePratt. The junior outfielder pinch ran for Danielle Bayer, who led off the inning with a double.

Trombley continued to stay strong throughout the entire game, shutting down the Pirates till the ninth inning. The freshman threw 108 pitches, throwing a complete game allowing three runs on 12 hits and striking out two.

The crowd and the Spartan team came alive in the bottom of the ninth. Kuchan led off the inning with a single to left. After a pop out by Corey Pitchford, Benck hit a hard grounder to shortstop Breyfogle, and the freshman threw wild to first, forcing Kuchan to advance to third and Benck to second. Wildhaber came up to the plate with a chance to win the game, and didn't disappoint knocking in the game winning RBI with a single to left, for the 4-3 win.

Game two didn't start off so well for the Spartans and starter Kirsten Bennett. In the bottom of the first, Kalla Jones hit a solo home run to left, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The offense wasn't done crushing the ball, as after a double by Jamie Tanno and a walk to Shaya Kinsey. Lindsay Sumner pushed Park's lead to 4-0, after hitting a three run homer over the left field wall.

Bennett has been pitching very well lately, but was pulled after the rough inning, allowing four runs on three hits. The Pirates added another run in the bottom of the second off reliever Kellsie Domnitz, making the score 5-0.

Park pushed their lead to 6-0 in the fourth, after a throwing error by Domnitz that scored Mallory Jansen from third. The Pirates added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, for the eight run win. Bentlage, Katie Payne and Bayer were the only Spartans to have a hit in game two.

The teams' winning streak ends at 12 in a row, but will look to start a new streak when the team heads on the road to play McKendree University at 11:00 a.m.
