Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. - The Missouri Baptist women's softball team, welcomed first place Williams Baptist College to town. The two teams split the double-header with MBU taking game one 3-2, but falling in game two, 4-2.
Freshman Jena Trombley took the hill in game one and dominated all day. The young pitcher held down the Lady Eagle offense, throwing a complete game, allowing seven hits and just two runs.
It was a slow start for each team at the plate, however, Williams Baptist grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Lady Eagle pitcher Shelby Anderson, kept the Spartan bats quiet until the bottom of the sixth. The team was down 2-0 and Donyelle DeMarse came in to pinch hit. DeMarse lined a screaming liner into left-center, for a leadoff double. Ashley Kroener then pinch-ran for DeMarse. Megan Wildhaber reached base on an error and Corey Pitchford bunted, moving the runners to second and third.
Lindsay Benck grounded out to second base, but Kroener was able to score from third, moving the score to 2-1. Jenna Bentlage singled to right, tying the game up 2-2. Neither team scored in the seventh, so it was time for extra innings.
In the bottom half of the eighth, Wildhaber started the inning off right with a single. Pitchford bunted, moving Wildhaber to second. Benck came up and doubled to right, putting runners on second and third. Bentlage reached on an intentional walk and Katie Payne came up with the bases loaded. The junior singled to right, bringing in the game winning RBI.
It was a different story in game two, as the Spartans committed five errors. The combined six runs in the game were scored in the fifth inning. Missouri Baptist grabbed a 1-0 lead, after Miranda Romero scored on a Wildhaber single to left. Lindsay Benck hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Natalie Aubuchon from third giving the team a 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Eagles scored four runs, on four hits, in the bottom of the fifth. The Spartans had a 2-1 lead, until Chelsea Sanders doubled in two runs, giving Williams Baptist the one run lead. WBC added one more run in the fifth, leading 4-2. Pitcher Karisa Hendrix closed the door on MBU, throwing a complete game, allowing two runs and striking out 10. The team will now head on the road during spring break to Kissimmee, Fla., for five days. First game is on March 12th at 9:00 a.m. against Trinity Christian College.
