Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior Lindsay Benck led the Spartans to a game one 7-3 victory over Benedictine-Springfield. In game two, the team shutout the Bulldogs 7-0 for the win.
Benck, whom is the only senior on the team, had a great day at the plate. The Arnold, Mo., native combined to go 4-6 with five RBI and two runs scored. In game one, the Spartans grabbed a 1-0 advantage, after Benck ripped a double to right center scoring Megan Wildhaber, who led off the inning with a single.
The Spartans struck again in the third, as Wildhaber got the offense going with a single to right. The shortstop was able to score after Benck hit her second double on the day, pushing the lead to 2-0.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Missouri Baptist extended the lead to 5-0, as the team pushed across three runs on three hits. Donyelle DeMarse added a RBI single and catcher Miranda Romero doubled to left, gaining two RBI. In the top of the sixth, is when the Bulldogs clawed back into the game. The Bulldogs scored three runs on six hits, all of them singles cutting the lead down to two.
Up until that point, starter Jena Trombley was cruising, as the freshman had only thrown 50 pitches. The team didn't let the rough inning bother them, as they added two more runs in the sixth, gaining a four run lead. Trombley and the team shut down Benedictine-Springfield in the seventh for the win.
Trombley went the distance allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out six in impressive fashion. The one-two hitters of Wildhaber and Benck went 4-5 on the day with three RBI and four runs scored.
In game two, the offense continued to swing hot bats and the pitching was stellar. Starter Kellsie Domnitz recorded her second consecutive shutout by allowing just five hits and striking out four.
Missouri Baptist grabbed the early one run advantage, after an RBI double from Corey Pitchford, which scored DeMarse from first. The Spartans held the lead up until the top of the fifth, as the team added two runs on three hits, taking a 3-0 lead.
The scoring continued into the sixth, as the Spartans got RBI from Miranda Romero and Natalie Aubuchon, extending the advantage to 5-0. The offense added two more extra runs in the seventh on three hits, for the seven run win.
Donyelle DeMarse and Pitchford each went 3-3 on the day, with DeMarse scoring twice and Pitchford adding one RBI. Benck added two more RBI on the day, going 2-4 with one run scored.
The Spartans move their record to 31-15 and will head on the road now to McKendree University on March 23rd. First pitch is set to be thrown at 2:00 p.m.
