Box Score 2 LEBANON, Ill. - Freshman Jena Trombley led the Spartan softball team to a 4-1 victory in game one against McKendree University. The freshman threw a complete game, allowing one run on five hits and striking out five. In game two, McKendree came out swinging, splitting the double header for the 7-2 win.
It was a pitching duel in game one, with the Spartans gaining the upper hand in extra innings. The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth, when Missouri Baptist grabbed a 1-0 lead after a single by Jenna Bentlage that scored Megan Wildhaber from second. The Bearcats battled and were able to tie the game up in the seventh, forcing extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Missouri Baptist scored three runs on two hits, taking a 4-1 lead. Trombley and the Spartans were able to close the door on the Bearcats for the three run victory. Offensively the Spartans totaled six hits on the afternoon, led by Donyelle DeMarse going 2-4 with two RBI. Miranda Romero added one RBI.
The Bearcats used a four run first inning, to put a damper on the Spartans sweeping them. The first inning was rough for starter Kellsie Domnitz, as she was chased after getting only two outs and allowing four runs on five hits. McKendree added another run in the third and two more in the fifth, taking a 7-0 lead.
The Spartans added two runs in the top of the sixth, but couldn't get a comeback going, falling by five runs. The team added just five hits in game two, as Lindsay Benck, Katie Payne, DeMarse, Danielle Bayer and Corey Pitchford each had one hit. Payne and DeMarse tallied one RBI.
The team ends the regular season with a 32-16 record, also being 8-8 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC). The Spartans now enter conference play as a #5 seed and will travel on the road to face #4 seed Columbia College on April 27th. First pitch will be thrown at 2:00 p.m.
