ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Missouri Baptist women's volleyball team performed for a rowdy crowd on several fronts Thursday evening at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex. The team not only extended its undefeated season at 11-0, but entertained the crowd with a surprise performance.
The fans were treated to a flash mob dance performance during the second intermission, taking place between the second and third sets. As both Missouri Baptist and Lindenwood-Belleville teams came back out onto the court, both began warming up, or peppering, as it is called. With four minutes remaining in the intermission, things went from very normal to…well…not.
Music played, just like during normal intermissions and stoppages of play. Then, from out of nowhere, two volleyball players abandoned their routine and began to dance. As Cassie Nesbit and Madeline Nesbit (not related) began to dance, the fans began to pay attention. Slowly, several more members of the team began to dance, all in rhythm.
By the time the student fan section, decked out in navy blue, began to notice, the entire team had tossed volleyballs aside to join their team, in lock-step. As fans cheered, the MBU Spartan mascot appeared, not only to cheer the team on, but to join in the action.
As the fans continued to respond, the coaching and Athletic Training staffs joined-in, filling one side of the court with a well-choreographed routine.
The Lindenwood-Belleville team had also stopped warming up. Not to dance, but to look in confusion and amazement at what had transpired across the net.
Missouri Baptist ended the dance to rousing applause by the crowd of over 400. Afterward, the team won the third set to end the match. It was the most decisive win of the night, 25-12.
It was a cap on a night where the team celebrated the first "Blue-Out" match of the season. Spartan Blue could be seen all throughout the student section and the fans got more than they bargained for.
Missouri Baptist is the 16th-ranked team in the NAIA, but most will not remember the night for the decisive victory or the extension of an undefeated season. Instead, the flash mob will be what will be talked about around campus Friday morning.
