ST. LOUIS – Two first half goals proved to be enough for the Eagles, as the Missouri Baptist women's soccer team lost to Avila, 2-0. The Spartans had six shots on goal, but could not dent the scoreboard. MBU falls to 7-6-3 on the season.
Sam Schulze made the start in net for the Spartans. She made two saves, but also allowed two first half goals. Elizabeth Kahn played the entire second half and made two saves.
Carly Hempel, Kaytlin Nevels, Anna Recer, Hannah McElroy, Megan Huffman and Melissa Patchin each had one shot on goal.
The Spartans had an early opportunity to take the lead when Hannah McElroy blasted a shot on goal six minutes into the contest. Stephanie Gartner made the save, but the Spartans were awarded a corner kick, and were unable to score.
Four minutes later, the Eagles were on top 1-0 after a Caryn Welch goal in the 10th minute.
In the 27th minute, Avila would take a 2-0 lead on Welch's second goal of the half.
Missouri Baptist would have four shots on goal in the half, but trailed 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, head coach Deno Merrick put Elizabeth Kahn in net. The half would go by fairly quietly, as both teams fired two shots on goal.
The Spartans fell 2-0, but have a chance at a win when they host AMC opponent Stephen's College on Saturday night at 8:00 pm. MBU is 5-1-2 in conference play and sits in fourth place in the standings. Stephen's College is 0-5-0 in AMC play and 1-12 overall.
