ST. LOUIS – On a night in which the Missouri Baptist women's soccer program honored seven seniors, the Spartans gave up two second half goals and fell to William Woods, 2-1. The loss drops MBU to 8-7-3 on the season and 6-2-2 in AMC play.
Goalkeeper Sam Schulze, forward Carly Hempel, midfielder Lauren Clinton, midfielder Kaytlin Nevels, forward Anna Recer, midfielder Megan Huffman and forward Taylor Chatmon were recognized with their parents before the game.
Schulze made the start in net and made eight saves, but allowed two second half goals. Nevels had the lone goal for the Spartans and had two shots on goal.
William Woods outshot MBU 17-15 and shots on goal 10-7.
In the first half, Nevels gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead nearly 20 minutes into the contest. Owl goalkeeper Kelly Abernathy tried to kick the ball downfield, but found Nevels instead. She blasted the ball past the keeper for her fourth goal of the season.
Both keepers made five saves in the first frame and MBU took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Spartans held a lead all the way until the final nine minutes. WWU's Jamie Palermo fired a shot past the Missouri Baptist keeper and tied the game up.
Palermo found the back of the net a second time just three minutes later. Her second goal of the game would be the game winner, as William Woods defeated MBU, 2-1.
The two teams flip-flopped spots in the AMC standings, as the loss dropped MBU to fourth and the Owls win moved them up to third place.
The top five spots are finalized, while the remaining spots in the AMC tournament will be decided on Wednesday and next Saturday.
The tournament schedule will be announced next week.
