ST. LOUIS- A 20-5 advantage in the shot column by the Missouri Baptist women's soccer team could not equate to a victory, as the Spartans tied Benedictine-Springfield, 1-1. Deno Merrick and his team are now 4-1-2 in AMC play and 6-5-3 overall.
The Spartans had 20 shots throughout the game and 11 on goal, but could not pierce the goal line. Kathryn Foytlin, Hannah McElroy and Lauren Clinton each had two shots on goal, while five other Spartans had one shot on goal.
Sam Schulze made the start in net. She gave up one goal and made one save. Elizabeth Kahn entered the game in the second overtime and did not face a shot.
Missouri Baptist nearly took a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game when Ashly Wiedenhoffer had a clean shot at the net. Her blast clanked off the post and could not find the back of the net.
Benedictine-Springfield would draw first blood with 18 minutes left in the first half. Cathy Tram drilled a shot off the post, but Courtney McCurdy found the rebound and put the Bulldogs on the board. It would be the only shot on goal for the Bulldogs in the half.
Missouri Baptist had three shots on goal, but trailed 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Spartans put a lot of pressure on the Benedictine-Springfield defense. In the first 11 minutes of the second half, MBU had three shots on goal.
With 28:26 left in regulation, Missouri Baptist got on the board via an own goal, which tied the contest at 1-1. Bulldogs goal keeper Lindsay Taylor would have to stop seven MBU shots in the second half.
Missouri Baptist had a chance to win the game with just 24 seconds left when Melissa Patchin's shot rang the goal post.
The two teams would play two overtimes, but neither team to get the game winning goal, resulting in the 1-1 tie.
Missouri Baptist has a strong hold on third place in the conference standings with a 4-1-2 record. The Spartans will host Freed-Hardeman at 11:00am on Friday. The Lady Lions are 2-2-1 in AMC play.
