Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist softball offense showed up big on Monday. The team scored a total of 34 runs and won both games against Benedictine 19-3 and 15-1.
The Spartans set the tone for the day in the first game. The offense put up five runs in the first, four runs in the second, and seven runs in the third on its way to a 19-3 victory. Four Spartans contributed six homeruns in the game. Danielle Bayer and Corey Pitchford each recorded a round-tripper while Jenna Bentlage and Deanna Peters hit two over the fence.
Jena Trombley was the winning pitcher in the game. The sophomore tossed three innings and struck out four. Trombley surrendered three hits in the game, but recorded zero earned runs.
The second game of the afternoon looked to be a close contest early, but the Spartans changed the outlook during a ten-run third.
MBU struck first against Benedictine in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single by Katie Payne. The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the second. Shelby Tudor hit a sacrifice fly that scored Stephanie Dwyer to make it a 1-1 contest.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the third. The MBU offense exploded for 10 runs during the inning. Six consecutive Spartans reached a base safely, and five runs crossed the plate before an out was recorded. Missouri Baptist added another five runs in the inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead.
The Spartans scored four more runs in the fourth, and defeated the Bulldogs 15-1. Jena Trombley was the winning pitcher for the second time on the day. The Corona, Calif., native pitched three solid innings and allowed one run on two hits. She also recorded three strikeouts in the game.
Jenna Bentlage and Corey Pitchford both had a productive day for MBU. Bentlage was a perfect five for five with four RBI and two homeruns. Pitchford went five for six with one homerun and four RBI.
