ST. LOUIS - [Box Score] Just two nights after winning a dramatic, energetic, and gut-wrenching upset win over No. 7 Columbia, the Missouri Baptist women's volleyball squad made quick work of Stephens College. The Spartans won in straight sets, 25-9, 25-17, and 25-10 to improve to 5-0 in American Midwest Conference play.
Missouri Baptist (18-1) hit an impressive .452 in the match, posting 43 kills and just ten errors on 73 swings. The Spartans hit .700 in the first set, firing 16 kills with just two errors on 20 attacks. In set two, MBU hit .385 with 13 kills and three errors on 26 swngs. In the finale, the Spartans hit .333 with 14 kills on 27 swings and five errors.
Freshman Kristina Medanovic posted a team-high 11 kills on 16 swings. She made just two errors and had an attack percentage of .563.
Sophomore Jen "Magic" Brendel fired nine kills on 12 swings with just one error. She added three aces one dig, and three block assists.
"Our middles just keep getting it done," said head coach Chris Nichols. "We got two big runs from Jen on the service line, and she was outstanding."
Junior Haley Pouliezos recorded just eight digs in the contest, mainly because the MBU middles played so well at the net. She added four service aces.
Pouliezos spent the first eleven serves at the service line as MBU built a 10-0 lead. "When you come off a big match like Columbia, setting the tone was huge and Haley got them out of system early," said Nichols.
Stephens was able to cut the deficit to 17-7 with three-straight points, but the Spartans erased any chance at a comeback and ended the set on an 8-2 run. MBU won set one, 25-9.
In set two, Stephens returned the favor by jumping out to an 11-2 lead, forcing coach Nichols to call a timeout.
That timeout proved to be just what the Spartans needed, as they exploded to a 13-12 lead.
The two teams battled back-and-forth and would see the score tied at 17-17. The Spartans ended the set on an 8-0 run to win 25-17.
Although the Stars were able to tie the third set at 2-2, the Spartans were able to stay ahead of Stephens the entire set. Missouri Baptist moved ahead 13-5, before powering their way to a 25-10 victory.
Missouri Baptist will travel to Harris-Stowe on Monday to clash with the Hornets in AMC action. First serve is set for 7 pm.
