Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [Game 1 Box Score] [Game 2 Box Score] The Missouri Baptist softball team dropped both games of the doubleheader today, falling to Freed-Hardeman 3-1 and 2-1. The second contest needed eight innings to find a winner.
Missouri Baptist (6-10, 0-2) trailed the entire game in the first contest, as Spartan pitcher Jena Trombley gave up two runs, one earned in the first inning.
The leadoff hitter for the Lady Lions reached on an error and moved all the way to third on a double by the FHU second hitter. Both runners would score on a single to right field off the bat of Kamara Trice.
Missouri Baptist cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the 5th inning. Kelsey Snider walked with two outs and came all the way around to score on a double to deep right field by Mariah Randazzo.
The Spartans got the tying run on first in the bottom of the 7th inning, as Snider singled to short, but a groundout to short ended the contest.
Jena Trombley was charged with the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, on nine hits. She struck out five batters and walked just one.
The Spartans had just five hits in the contest. Kelsey Snider led MBU, going 2-for-2, with a run scored. Brittany Edelen (1-for-3), Mariah Randazzo (1-for-4), and Megan Medcalf (1-for-3) each had hits for the Spartans.
In game two, the two team's switched roles, as the Lady Lions were the designated home team.
The Spartans got on the board in the top of the 1st inning with one run. Edelen led off with a slap base hit to short, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Snider. Edelen moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mariah Randazzo.
Missouri Baptist pitcher Andrea Chessor gave up just four hits over the first six innings, but ran into some tough luck in the 7th inning. Amanda Bond led off the inning with a double off the right field wall. Haley Craig entered the game as a pinch runner and would score on an unfortunate play for the Spartans. Natalie Nelson hit what seemed to be a routine groundball, but Corey Pitchford misplayed the groundball. That allowed Nelson to reach first base and Craig to move to third. Pitchford elected to make the throw to first, which got past Megan Medcalf. The ball went out of play, bringing the tying run across home plate. Chessor was able to settle her team down and escape the jam without allowing the game winning run to score.
In the top of the 8th inning, Edelen ripped a single to right-center, and advanced to second on Snider's sac bunt. Freed-Hardeman pitcher Kamara Trice forced two pop-ups to end the threat.
In the bottom half of the inning, Jessica Weeks singled to left to leadoff things for the Lady Lions. She moved to second on a sac bunt, but the out was not recorded because of an MBU error. Weeks moved to third on a sac bunt, which put the game winning run on third. Chessor induced a groundout that gave the Spartans two outs. Amanda Bond then fouled off five-straight pitches before roping a walk-off single to left-center, giving the Lady Lions the sweep.
Andrea Chessor was the tough-luck loser on the mound. She threw 7.2 innings, giving up two runs, both unearned. She scattered seven hits and struck out four batters.
Missouri Baptist had seven hits in the contest. Brittany Edelen led MBU, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Andrea Chessor (1-for-3), Megan Medcalf (1-for-3), Payton Anderson (1-for-2), and Corey Pitchford (1-for-3) each had hits for MBU.
The Spartans will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader date with Mid-Continent. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
