Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [Game 1 Box Score] [Game 2 Box Score] The winning streak has reached four games after the Missouri Baptist softball team swept St. Mary-of-the-Woods, 2-1 and 6-1. The victory pushed the Spartans to .500 with a 10-10 record.
Missouri Baptist once again relied on solid pitching, as freshman Andrea Chessor and Jena Trombley allowed just two runs over 14 innings.
In the first contest, the Pomeroys took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning. After Chessor retired the first two batters, she allowed a single to center. The next hitter's at-bat was extended after Mackenzie Friedly could not handle a foul ball, and she came through with a base hit. Chessor then got a routine pop fly that would have ended the inning, but Corey Pitchford could not squeeze the ball, resulting in the run to cross the plate.
The Spartans answered back with a run in the bottom half of the 3rd. Brittany Edelen smacked a one out single up the middle and advanced to second on Kelsey Snider's groundout. Mariah Randazzo then roped a double to right-center, plating Edelen and tying the game.
In the bottom of the 6th, MBU added another run on two hits. Andrea Chessor lined a single to left-center with one out to start the rally. Deanna Peters came in to pinch-run for Chessor and quickly stole second. Peters moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a single through the right side off the bat of Mackenzie Friedly.
Chessor ran into some trouble in the 7th, as the Pomeroys led off the inning with a single down the left field line. Chessor induced a ground ball to get the first out and then struck out the final two batters to secure the victory.
Friedly led the Spartans with a 2-for-3 performance. She added the game-winning RBI. Brittany Edelen (1-for-3), Mariah Randazzo (1-for-2, RBI, 1 2B), Andrea Chessor (1-for-3), and Sierra Thompson (1-for-3, 1 2B), added hits for Missouri Baptist.
Chessor earned another complete game victory, her sixth win of the season. She scattered seven hits, gave up one run, unearned, and struck out eight batters.
In game two, the Spartans smacked ten hits en route to the 6-1 victory. Jena Trombley earned the complete game victory, giving up one earned run on six hits. She walked five and struck out two.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead with a run in the 1st. Kelsey Snider hit the ball just three feet, but used her speed to beat the throw to first for an infield single. The next play was controversial, but the correct call. Snider attempted to steal second, which forced the shortstop to cover the throw. The throw from the catcher pulled the defensive player into the baseline, stopping Snider a few feet from reaching the bag. After the shortstop tried to tag Snider, the ball popped out. Instead of grabbing the ball, the player stayed on top of Snider, which activated the obstruction call by the umpire.
Snider moved to third on a passed ball, setting up an RBI single up the middle by Megan Medcalf.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods answered with a run in the top of the 2nd on three hits. The inning could have been disastrous for Trombley and the Spartans, but Randazzo scooped up a groundball with the bases loaded and fired to the plate for the second out of the inning. Edelen ended the inning by tracking down a line drive, which kept the score tied at 1-1.
Missouri Baptist scored another run in the 2nd. Deanna Peters laced a single through the right side with one out and stole second on the next pitch. With two outs, Payton Anderson poked a single to right-center, plating Peters.
In the bottom of the 4th, MBU scored its third run of the game, thanks to Peters' quick feet. After she walked with two outs, she motored her way around the bases on a double down the left field line by Katie Alexander.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods threatened with a big inning in the top of the 5th, but Trombley got out of the inning on her own. She induced back-to-back groundouts to start the inning, but then faced a walk, error, and base hit, which loaded the bases. Trombley diced up the final hitter of the inning, posting the strikeout.
Missouri Baptist pulled away with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the 6th. Medcalf led off with a single to left, which allowed Toni Stang to pinch run. Stang moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Williams. Sierra Thompson plated Stang with a single through the left side, and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Peters followed with an infield single, moving Thompson to third. Peters then stole second, setting up second and third with just one out. Alexander did her job, which was to get the runner across home plate. She skied a ball to center for a sac fly, which scored Thompson. Payton Anderson followed with a ball that hugged the left field foul line for a double that scored Peters.
Trombley was able to hold off the Pomeroys in the 7th, securing the sweep for the Spartans.
Payton Anderson led the Spartans in game two, going 2-for-3. She roped a double and posted two RBI. Kelsey Snider (2-for-3, run), Megan Medcalf (2-for-3, 1 RBI), and Deanna Peters (2-for-2, 3 runs, 1 walk, 2 stolen bases), each had two hits for MBU.
Missouri Baptist continues its home stand on Friday, when they host Harris-Stowe in an AMC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
