SOFTBALL PLAYS WILLIAM WOODS CLOSE BUT FALLS IN DOUBLEHEADER, 3-1 AND 2-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – Just four runs separated the two teams in a doubleheader, but the Missouri Baptist softball team was swept by William Woods, 3-1 and 2-0.

Missouri Baptist (28-18, 11-7 AMC) scored just one run over 14 innings against the Owls, but gave up only five.

In game one, Jena Trombley picked up the tough loss. She gave up three runs, two earned, on eight hits. The junior struck out one and walked two.

The Spartans stroked just three hits against the Owls (30-15, 16-2 AMC). The top team in the American Midwest Conference got MBU to strike out seven times.

Brittany Edelen (1-for-3), Sierra Thompson (1-for-2, walk), and Payton Anderson (1-for-3) were the only Spartans to record hits. Darrian Chrzanoski, who came in to run for Anderson, scored the lone run for MBU.

A leadoff walk set the table for the Owls in the bottom of the 2nd inning. After the Owls sacrificed the runner to second, they picked up an RBI triple to get the scoring started. A two-out single through the left side pushed another run across the plate, giving William Woods a 2-0 lead.

The Owls pushed across another run in the bottom of the 6th inning to take a 3-0 lead.

The Spartans cut into the deficit in the top of the 7th inning with one run, but they could not overcome the 3-1 score, resulting in the final score.

In game two, the game was tied 0-0 before the Owls plated two runs in the top of the 6th inning off starter Andrea Chessor.

The Spartans had the first scoring chance of the game in the 4th, as they had Mariah Randazzo on third base with one out, but a line out and ground out ended the threat without a run.

After giving up a run in the top of the 6th, the Spartans had first and second in the bottom of the frame with just one out. Randazzo stroked a hard-hit ball to third, but it was too hard, as the Owls turned the inning ending double play.

The Spartans had the game-tying run at the plate in the bottom of the 7th, but the Owls induced a pop out to end the game.

Edelen went 1-for-3 in the contest. Mariah Randazzo, Amanda Williams, and Mackenzie Friedly also went 1-for-3 in the contest.

Chessor gave up just two earned runs on six hits over 7.0 innings to get the loss. She struck out two and walked two.

Missouri Baptist will travel St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Monday for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm.
