Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [Game 1 Box Score] [Game 2 Box Score] The hole keeps getting bigger for the Missouri Baptist softball team. The Spartans dropped both game to the Lyon Scots, 7-6 and 5-3.

Missouri Baptist (23-22, 11-9 AMC) dropped its sixth-straight American Midwest Conference game after starting conference play 11-3. The good news for the Spartans is that they held onto their 5th spot in the AMC standings, but their next opponent is right on their heels. Williams Baptist, Saturday's opponent, is 8-8 in conference play.

The Spartans started off the game hot, scoring two runs in the top of the 1st. Mackenzie Friedly got the inning going with a one-out single up the middle. She moved to third on Mariah Randazzo's double to left-center. Friedly would score and Randazzo moved to third when the relay throw was misplayed. Amanda Williams did her job at the plate, sending a fly ball to the outfield, which scored Randazzo.

The Scots (17-21, 9-11 AMC) tied things at 2-2 with two runs on two hits and an MBU error in the bottom of the 1st.

Lyon added two more runs on two hits and one MBU error in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The Spartans took the lead once again with four runs on five hits in the top of the 5th. Payton Anderson led off with a double to deep right center, and Chelsea Crain entered to pinch run. Sierra Thompson moved Crain to 3rd with a single to center, and she moved to second on the relay throw home. Donyelle DeMarse cracked her third triple of her career and first of the season, which plated both runners to tie the game at 4-4. Corey Pitchford then singled up the middle, plating pinch runner Kelsey Snider. Andrea Chessor reached on a bunt single, moving Pitchford to second. After the Scots got the second out of the inning, Mackenzie Friedly hit a sac fly to score Pitchford. That gave MBU a commanding 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th.

Lyon did what they needed in the bottom of the 7th inning, as they scored three runs on three hits and one MBU error to win on a walk off single.

Missouri Baptist had 11 hits in the game, led by Mackenzie Friedly. She went 2-for-2 with a run scored, had an RBI, a sac fly and a sacrifice bunt. Brittany Edelen went 2-for-4, while Donyelle DeMarse went 1-for-1 with a two-RBI triple.

Andrea Chessor took the loss. She gave up seven runs, three earned, on ten hits over 6.2 innings. She struck out four, hit two, and walked one.

In game two, the Scots jumped on the board with a run on two hits in the top of the 1st.

Missouri Baptist answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Brittany Edelen led off by reaching base on a throwing error, and moved to second when the throw went down the right field line. She stole third base and then scored on a misplay by the Scots.

The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 3rd on two hits. Sierra Thompson led off the inning with a single through the left side. She would move to second on Edelen's bunt single. The two would move up a base on a sac bunt by Mackenzie Friedly. Mariah Randazzo hit a sac fly to score Thompson, giving MBU a 2-1 lead after three innings.

Lyon broke through in the top of the 5th, plating three runs on three hits.

After starting pitcher Jena Trombley walked a batter with one out in the 6th, head coach Craig Walston brought in Morgan Truitt. She struck out the first batter she faced and ended the inning on a fly out to left.

Missouri Baptist cut into the deficit with one run on two hits in the bottom of the 6th. Friedly led off with a single to center and scored when Randazzo roped a double to left center.

The Scots added an insurance run in the top of the 7th, and took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the inning.

MBU went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th to end the game.

Trombley picked up the loss after giving up four earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings of work. She walked six and struck out just one. Truitt gave up one unearned run on one hit over the final 1.2 innings. She walked two and struck out two.

Offensively, the Spartans could only muster four hits in the game. Randazzo led the squad, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and a double. Edelen (1-for-3, run scored, stolen base), Friedly (1-for-2, run scored, stolen base), and Thompson (1-for-2, run scored) all recorded hits.

Missouri Baptist takes on Williams Baptist on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 am.
