Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [Game 1 Box Score] [Game 2 Box Score] The Missouri Baptist softball team dropped to under .500 for the first time in exactly one month, as the Spartans lost both games to Williams Baptist, 8-2 and 8-2.
The Spartans have now lost ten straight games.
Missouri Baptist (23-24, 11-11 AMC) quickly trailed, as the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the 1st, thanks to a two-out full count 2-run blast.
Williams Baptist took a 4-0 lead after two innings of play when they scored two runs on two hits and aided by one MBU error.
The Eagles added another run in the 3rd inning on two hits.
Missouri Baptist answered with runs in the 4th and 5th.
In the top of the 4th, Sierra Thompson led off the inning with a single to right. She moved to second on Andrea Chessor's ground out and advanced to third on Brittany Edelen's single through the right side. Mackenzie Friedly smacked a fly ball to the outfield for the second out, but Thompson was able to score, cutting the deficit to 5-1 after four innings.
In the fifth, things got crazy. Payton Anderson, who re-entered into the game in the bottom of the 4th, was called out due to batting out of order. Chaos ensued, as head coach Craig Walston declared a protest. As the game continued, the Spartans turned up the heat on offense. Corey Pitchford smacked a double to deep center, but had to stay at second when the second out was retired on a ground out. Amanda Williams came through with a two-out single to left center, scoring Pitchford. The Spartans trailed 5-2 after five innings.
Williams Baptist sealed the deal with three runs in the bottom of the 6th on three hits.
The blue and white were unable to cut into the deficit and the score ended with the Eagles on top, 8-2.
Corey Pitchford led MBU at the plate. She went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and a double. Brittany Edelen went 3-for-4 with a stolen base. Amanda Williams was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Sierra Thompson went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Andrea Chessor took the loss. She gave up eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits over 6.0 innings of work. Chessor struck out one and walked two in the contest.
In game two, the Spartans put two runs across in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead. Donyelle DeMarse led off the inning with a five-pitch walk and would jog around the bases when Amanda Williams blasted a 2-run home run.
The Eagles answered with three runs on four hits off of MBU starter Morgan Truitt in the top of the 3rd.
The teams were held scoreless over the next three innings, until Williams Baptist sent 10 hitters to the plate in the top of the 7th. They were able to score five runs and take a commanding 8-2 lead.
Missouri Baptist could not muster anything in the bottom of the 7th, as the Spartans went 1-2-3 to end the game.
Morgan Truitt picked up the loss after giving up eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits over 6.2 innings. Jena Trombley got the final out of the 7th.
The Spartans had just two hits in the contest. Amanda Williams went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. Mariah Randazzo went 1-for-2 with a double and a hit by pitch.
