ST. LOUIS - [BOX SCORE] The No. 3-ranked Missouri Baptist women's volleyball team fell to a tough No. 10 Columbia College team 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday in the NAIA Match of the Week.
The battle began in set one as the teams fought for the first victory in the match and recorded 13 ties, the highest total in the match. Taylor Cook struck first blood for MBU with a kill, but it was the Cougars who turned things around and took the set 25-22.
As set two approached the Spartans took the court in search of their first win of the match. MBU was off to a good start with a service error from Columbia. Missouri Baptist then went on a 4-1 run before the Cougars snapped back into action. The Spartans held their early lead throughout the entirety of the match to tie things up to one set apiece. MBU recorded its highest hitting percentage of the match with 0.394 while holding CC to their lowest of 0.161.
Set three yielded a bumpy start for the Spartans as the Cougars took an early lead. Missouri Baptist was unable to regain the advantage and CC notched their second win of the match to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars held control of the set with a hitting percentage of 0.349.
Columbia College started set four off with another service error, but MBU was unable to capitalize off of it. As CC took the lead, the Spartans were unable to recover as Columbia kept the Missouri Baptist at bay long enough to take the match 3-1. The No. 10-ranked team in the nation held Missouri Baptist to a negative hitting percentage in the final set.
The Spartans have only been held to a negative hitting percentage in a single set once in 2015 by NCAA DII McKendree University (Ill.).
Mallory Dillon was big at the net with 20 kills and three blocking assists. Cook and Hannah Carey both notched seven kills apiece.
Setter Ally Krus led the offense with 38 total assists for an average of 9.5.
Libero, Haley Pouliezos fed setter Krus with a total of 17 digs. Cook was right behind Pouliezos with 14 digs of her own.
Two Spartans were named to the Spartan Invitational All-Tournament team: Mallory Dillon and Kristina Medanovic.
MBU will pick up right where they left off as the team travels to St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
