Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [Game One Box] [Game Two Box] The Missouri Baptist softball team continued to blast the long ball in a doubleheader sweep over Williams Baptist College. The Spartans won game one on a walk-off, 5-4, before soundly defeating the Eagles in game two, 10-4.
Missouri Baptist (5-3, 2-0 AMC) stroked 22 hits over the two contests, smacking five doubles, two triples, and three home runs.
Kara Pochon led the Spartans with three hits in four at-bats in game one. She added a double and a stolen base.
Lexi Gray smacked two hits, with an RBI and a triple.
Junior Payton Anderson continued her long ball streak, drilling a solo blast.
Williams Baptist took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Spartans answered with two runs. Payton Anderson led off the inning with a solo bomb to center on a 3-1 count. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead on Lexi Gray's triple down the right field line, which plated Mikala Torrence.
MBU received a boost from sophomore Andrea Chessor in the 4th inning. After Deanna Peters reached on a one-out walk, Chessor slammed a 2-run home run to right-center to extend the lead to 4-1.
In the top of the 7th, the Eagles used three hits and two MBU errors to tie the game at 4-4.
Missouri Baptist answered in the bottom of the 7th inning. Pochon led off with a single to shallow right field and moved to second on Anderson's sac bunt. Anderson reached first when two Eagle players collided on the fielding attempt. Randazzo moved the runners to second and third on a sac bunt and Torrence was put on via intentional walk. That brought in pinch-hitter Donyelle DeMarse. She sailed a sac fly to center, sending Pochon to the plate for the game-winning run. Instead of letting the perfect throw to the plate beat Pochon, the Eagle pitcher cut the ball off, allowing Pochon to slide in safely without a tag. It was the third consecutive walk-off victory for the Spartans.
Andrea Chessor earned the complete game victory for MBU. She allowed four unearned runs on five hits.
In game two, the Eagles came out with a split in mind. They plated three runs on two hits and one MBU error to take a 3-0 lead after a half-inning of play.
Missouri Baptist responded by scoring four runs on three hits and three WBC errors. Snider and Pitchford reached on errors to begin the game and Payton Anderson made the Eagles pay. On a 1-1 pitch, she hammered a 3-run blast to left tie the game at 3-3. It was her fifth long ball of the season. The Spartans tacked on one more run on the third Eagle error of the inning, which sent Pochon across home plate.
In the 2nd inning, Corey Pitchford led off with a triple to right field and scored two plays later on Mariah Randazzo's fielder's choice. The Spartans led 5-3 after two innings.
Missouri Baptist continued to pour in the runs with three more in the 3rd inning. Andrea Chessor roped a one-out double to center. Kelsey Snider reached on a walk and the two runners moved to second and third on Pitchford's ground out. Anderson picked-up RBI four and five in the game with a double off the right field wall, extending the lead to 7-3. Pochon plated Anderson with a single to deep right-center. MBU led 8-3 after just three innings.
In the bottom of the 5th, Snider reached on a bunt single. She promptly stole second and scored on a double by Pitchford. The Spartans led 9-3 after five complete innings.
Williams Baptist cut the deficit to 8-4 with a run on two hits in the 6th inning.
Missouri Baptist scored the final run of the game on a Chessor single to left, which scored Torrence.
Freshman Madison Calvert shut the door in the 7th, and allowed just one hit. That secured the 10-4 victory for the Spartans.
Jena Trombley earned the win in the circle. She tossed 5.0 innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits.
Kara Pochon led the Spartans with three hits in four at-bats. She drove in two RBI and recorded a double.
Payton Anderson led MBU with five RBI on a double and home run. She scored twice and was hit once.
Corey Pitchford tallied a double and triple for her two hits in the game.
Missouri Baptist will look to continue the power surge with a doubleheader against Lyon. First pitch is set for noon.
