Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [Game One Box] [Game Two Box] The Missouri Baptist softball team has showed no signs of slowing down, as the Spartans completed the season sweep with two more victories over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. MBU won game one 5-4, while taking game two in eight innings, 9-7.
Freshman Madison Calvert earned the victory in the circle. It was her first complete game of her career. Calvert tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just one earned run (three unearned) on ten hits. She struck out three batters.
The Spartans poked 11 hits in the contest. Junior Payton Anderson reached base three times in the contest. She ripped two hits in three at-bats, scored a run, drove in a run, and reached via walk.
Mikala Torrence went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kelsey Snider also went 2-for-4. She scored once, drove in a run, and stole a base.
Sophomore Andrea Chessor had just one hit, but it was a two-RBI double.
The Spartans trailed 2-0 after two innings of play, but MBU answered with three runs in the third.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods tallied a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, which gave the Pomeroys a 4-3 lead after five innings.
Missouri Baptist tied the game with a run in the 6th, and added the game-winning run in the 7th frame. The Spartans won the contest, 5-4.
Calvert also earned the victory in game two. She came in to toss 4.0 innings in relief. She allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits.
Freshman Nicole Hughes tossed the first 4.0 innings. She allowed five runs, four earned, on 11 hits.
Mikala Torrence and Payton Anderson combined for six hits in eight at-bats. Anderson scored twice, walked once, and drove in a run.
Dee Dee Peters, Chessor, Kara Pochon, Mariah Randazzo, Darrian Chrzanoski, and Pam Diaz added RBI in the contest.
Missouri Baptist got on the board with a run in the top of the 1st. SMWC answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Spartans responded with three runs in the second.
The Pomeroys took a 5-4 lead after plating three runs in the fourth inning.
The Spartans tied the game with heroics in the 7th inning. After a groundout began the inning, Randazzo reached on an error. Pinch-hitter Lexi Gray reached on a throwing error, which moved Randazzo all the way to third. Darrian Chrzanoski followed with a sac bunt, which scored Randazzo to tie the game at 5-5.
In the top of the 8th inning, extra inning rules put Pam Diaz on second base. Peters reached on an error, which scored Diaz. The Spartans would add three more runs in the inning to take a comfortable 9-5 lead.
The Pomeroys plated two runs in the bottom of the 8th, but Calvert was able to keep the tying run away from the plate, giving MBU the 9-7 victory.
The Spartans will take on Columbia in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. The games are scheduled to be broadcasted on the Spartan Digital Network.
