The Spartans saw first-hand the ability of Cougar leadoff hitter, Carly Spalding. In the first at-bat of the day, Spalding ripped a shot to left, stole second, and scored on a single. The Cougars led 1-0 after a half-inning.

The next hit brought centerfielder Dee Dee Peters on a dead sprint towards the infield. She caught the ball on the edge of the grass, but the speedy Spalding, tagged and scored on the play. That gave Columbia a 4-3 lead.
Missouri Baptist had a strong chance at not only tying the game, but taking the lead in the bottom of the 6th. Kara Pochon led off the inning with a four-pitch walk. That brought game one starter, Paxton Welch, in to relieve starter Lauren McCroskie. Dee Dee Peters moved Pochon to second with a sac bunt and Donyelle DeMarse drew a walk. A scary scene ensued following the contest. A Columbia fan took a hard fall in the parking lot, and the two teams came together for a prayer as the paramedics arrived. We are happy to announce that the fan was in good spirits as he was taken away in the ambulance.
Missouri Baptist will need to have a short memory, as they play Hannibal-LaGrange and Benedictine-Springfield, this weekend.
