SOFTBALL DROPS TWO CLOSE GAMES TO LINDENWOOD-BELLEVILLE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [Game One Box] [Game Two Box] In tightly-contested doubleheader against the top-ranked team in the American Midwest Conference, the Missouri Baptist softball team dropped both games against Lindenwood-Belleville. The Lynx won game one 5-4 in ten innings, and won game two 5-3.

In game one, the Spartans threatened to score from the get-go. Corey Pitchford ripped an infield single with one out and moved to third when Payton Anderson doubled to right field. Missouri Baptist stranded the runners on base when the next two batters were retired.

The Spartans tallied two runs on three hits in the top of the 3rd inning. Kelsey Snider led off the inning with a single to center and moved to third when Pitchford cracked a one-out single to center. Two batters later, sophomore Andrea Chessor roped a single to center to score both runners.

Lindenwood-Belleville answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, capped-off by a two-run blast to dead center.

Missouri Baptist took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 5th when Payton Anderson singled-home Mikala Torrence. The Spartans had a chance to extend the lead, but stranded the runners on second and third.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Lynx plated two runs on three hits to take a 4-3 lead.

Down to the final three outs of the game, the Spartans went to work in the 7th. Torrence reached on a dropped fly ball by the Lynx centerfielder to lead off the inning. She would come around to tie the game on Pitchford's single to left.

Freshman Madison Calvert came in to pitch the 7th, and she retired the Lynx in order.

In the 8th, Calvert induced back-to-back lineouts, but a single and a Spartan error put the winning run on second. Calvert forced the next batter to ground out to second, ending the threat.

Missouri Baptist nearly took the lead in the top of the 10th. As the international tiebreaker activated, Dee Dee Peters was put on second base. On the first pitch, she stole third base. The Lynx argued that Peters entered the game as an illegal substitution, which caused a 16-minute delay. After the dust settled, no change was required. Kara Pochon tried to score Peters with a ground ball to short, but the Lynx fired the ball home and Peters was tagged out. MBU could not get the go-ahead run across home plate.

Senior Jena Trombley entered the game in relief and faced the game-winning run on second base. The first out was recorded on a sac bunt, which moved the runner to third. Trombley induced a ground out to short, and the runner elected to stay at third. The next batter reached on an infield single and the game winning run came around to score.

The Lynx took the game, 5-4.

Corey Pitchford led MBU with a 3-for-4 game. She scored once, drove in one run, and reached on a walk.

Payton Anderson went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a double.

Andrea Chessor poked two hits in three at-bats and tallied two RBI. She also pitched 6.0 effective innings. The sophomore gave up four earned runs on five hits. She recorded three strikeouts and one walk.

Madison Calvert tossed 3.0 innings in relief. She did not allow a run on one hit.

In game two, the Spartans plated one run in the 1st, on two hits. Mikala Torrence led off the game with a double to left. She moved to third on Corey Pitchord's single, and would score when Payton Anderson grounded into a double play.

Lindenwood-Belleville responded with two runs on two hits and one MBU error in the 1st.

The Lynx extended the lead to 4-1 with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd.

Missouri Baptist cut the deficit to 4-3 in the 5th with two runs on two hits. Torrence poked a one-out single to right. With two out, Payton Anderson crushed her 11th home run of the season, this one of the two-run variety.

LU-B added an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th on three hits.

In the top of the 7th, the Spartans had a chance at not only tying the game, but taking the lead. Dee Dee Peters singled to third to lead off the inning. She moved to second on a wild pitch and sprinted to third on the wild throw. Mikala Torrence took one for the team and reached on a hit by pitch. The Lynx elected to intentionally walk Anderson with one out, setting-up bases loaded for Andrea Chessor. She poked a ground ball to short, which forced pinch-runner Pam Diaz to be out at second. Diaz did not slide and the throw to first hit her, which caused the umpire to declare Chessor out on the interference. That ended the game and gave the Lynx the 5-3 victory.

Anderson led the Spartans with a 2-for-3 performance. She tallied three RBI, a two-run homer, and an intentional walk.

Mikala Torrence went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double.

Corey Pitchford added two hits in four at-bats.

Madison Calvert took the loss in the contest after throwing 3.0 innings. She gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits.

Senior Jena Trombley pitched the final 3.0 innings. She gave up one earned run on three hits.

The Spartans will look to get back into the win column with a doubleheader against William Woods on Tuesday afternoon.
